This is the ultimate healthy side dish. It’s colorful, flavorful, nutritious, and versatile. It goes great on chips. In fact, most of us know of salsa as the excuse we use to consume tortilla chips in unhealthy quantities.

Salsa is the Spanish word for sauce and it can be used as such. It’s a lovely way to add a fresh burst of flavor to a taco or grilled dish. It can be used to garnish the finished product or can be applied prior to cooking as a marinade. It can be paired with guacamole to give dinner guests garnishing options at your next Latin-inspired fiesta.

Tomato-based salsas are typical, however salsa verde can be applied in much the same fashion and is made using tomatillos (small green tomato-like vegetables) as a base.

This fresh spicy salsa doesn’t use any additional spices because with fresh ingredients, it can stand on its own. If season or the luck-of-the-draw is not on your side in respect to freshness or receptiveness to the taste buds, you can accentuate the dish with a light application of either cumin, cayenne, pepper, or a spice of your preference.

Please don’t use the cilantro if you’re one of the unfortunate souls for whom cilantro is soapy rather than scrumptious. I honestly don’t know an equivalent substitution to capture this flavor accurately.

Please note, the use a jalapeno and Serrano, with their seeds, may overwhelm some. But if you can take the heat, add more. It’s delightfully painful. It is also inherently part of what makes this a spicy salsa. High temperature peppers in the appetizer makes for an exceptionally delicious excuse for tears.
